The Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, said refurbishing non-functioning and dilapidated heritage sites remains the provincial government’s priority.
One of the dilapidated heritage sites is the Walter Sisulu Square located in Kliptown, which is significant for the adoption of the Freedom Charter.
Another site is the Women's Living Heritage Site in Pretoria, which remains partially open despite millions being spent on its upgrades.
Lesufi was speaking at Heritage Day celebrations at the Kagiso Memorial Centre on Wednesday afternoon.
"There will be challenges in maintaining these particular sites and that is why days like today serve as a reminder that don’t ignore those important sites."
