Joburg motorists are urged to steer clear of the N1 North highway in Sandton this afternoon after two people died following an accident caused by oil spillage on the route.
Emergency services are currently on site assessing the scene.
Joburg Metro Police (JMPD) say preliminary investigations suggest a truck overturned earlier, spilling thousands of litres of oil on the road. Two other passenger vehicles were involved in the accident.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says all affected lanes before the Winnie Mandela Drive on-ramp have been closed off to traffic.
"Motorists should expect severe delays and are strongly advised to exercise caution and to use alternative routes," Fihla stated.
