The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has been granted an order to freeze the assets of tender tycoon Hangwani Morgan Maumela, who has been flagged as one of the syndicates at the Tembisa Hospital.

The SIU is delivering its interim report on the capture of the hospital, with dodgy tenders of about R2 billion identified.

The unit has been investigating irregularities and fraudulent activities at the facility after whistleblower Babita Deokoran flagged irregular tenders worth over R800 million in 2021.

Deokaran was assassinated in August of that year.

SIU head advocate Andy Mothibi said Maumela's syndicate, which is linked to dodgy businessman Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, scored tenders worth over R800 million at the hospital.

"The SIU has traced 41 suppliers or service providers linked to Maumela. Three of the companies that were awarded contracts to the value of R13,538,292 in this syndicate are linked to Vusimuzi Matlala. Maumela’s identified assets amount to around R520,000,000, including luxury vehicles and properties valued at R293,434,000."
