Transport authorities in the Western Cape have been advised to follow examples of other international cities in addressing the traffic congestion crisis in Cape Town.
Traffic congestion in the city is said to have reached crisis levels and ranks as the ninth most congested city in the world.
It's also the most congested city in South Africa.
Rapid population growth and an increase of private vehicle use have been identified as some of the contributors to the problem.
Transport planner, Ahmed Mulla, said there were international practices that the province and the city could learn from to alleviate the pressure on the Cape's roads.
Speaking at the launch of Mobility Month in Cape Town on Wednesday, Mulla said congestion could be managed but not eliminated.
"You have cities that are talking about not just public transport and the implementation of good public transport networks, but they've also got like travel demand management measures about parking restrictions in CBDs, car-pooling incentives, employer incentives. Cities like London, Tokyo, New York as well, these are all congested cities, but they've got good alternatives."
Mulla added that a safe, reliable public transport network remains the best alternative.
