The National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (NEHAWU) is calling on Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko to urgently deal with the crisis at the province’s healthcare facilities.

Union members said misconduct and corruption in the sector has left them vulnerable.

Last week, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) released a report showing that R2 billion was stolen through irregular tender deals at the Tembisa Hospital.

NEHAWU will deliver a memorandum to the MEC’s office in Johannesburg on Friday, demanding immediate action be taken to improve services.

NEHAWU members in their white, red and green regalia have gathered at Gandhi Square in the CBD of Johannesburg.

The union said it urgently needs the department to account for its allegedmaladministration in the province’s hospitals.

NEHAWU provincial secretary Mzikayise Tshontsi said they wanted the department to intervene.

"We are here to demand immediate action from the department in order for all of those that are seen to have been participating in siphoning the funds that are so needed by the community to be brought to book and that the law must take its course and deal with these people. But the department must be held to account for what has happened.

Tshontsi said they will not stop with their demands until they are adequately addressed.
