Five people have been shot and killed in a mass shooting at a tavern in Zithobeni, in Bronkhorstspruit, near Tshwane on Sunday morning.
Police said that six others were wounded during the attack.
It is understood that two armed suspects entered the tavern and robbed a patron of his licensed firearm.
During the robbery, the suspects reportedly opened fire at random, wounding the man they had stolen the weapon from, and fatally shooting five others.
Gauteng Police Spokesperson Brenda Muridili said that a case of murder and robbery has been opened.
"The police in Bronkhorstspruit responded to a shooting incident at a tavern in Zithobeni, on 5 October 2025 at about 01:30, where five people were killed and six were injured. It is reported by witnesses that two men known in the community came into the tavern and demanded that one of the patron’s handover his licensed firearm."
