Johannesburg City Power insists the recent search and seizure operation carried out by the Hawks at its headquarters was unlawful.

The utility approached the High Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday, seeking an order declaring the operations invalid.

The Hawks raided City Power offices last week as part of an ongoing investigation into suspected irregular contracts.

However, City Power argues that the search warrants used to access its premises were vague and therefore invalid.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said he's confident the utility will win the case.

"Normal warrants are specific as to what they want to look into. The Hawks' search warrant did not specify what exactly they were looking for. On their last visit [to City Power headquarters], they wanted to take the entire server, but we have a responsibility to protect the information of our customers, residents, staff members and contractors."

The matter has been postponed to Friday to allow the Hawks' legal team to file their answering affidavit.
