The six South African activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla have returned home, walking into a packed and highly emotional arrivals terminal at OR Tambo International Airport after being detained by Israeli forces for several days.

The group was part of a larger international contingent of activists who had embarked on a humanitarian mission to deliver vital aid to war-torn Gaza.

This week, the South African delegation was released from detention and flew back to South Africa via Jordan.

As the activists walked through the terminal doors, the crowd, which included loved ones and supporters, erupted in cheers.

Many in the crowd waved large and small Palestinian flags in a show of solidarity.

Family members rushed forward, embracing the activists in long, emotional hugs.

Among the returnees was Mandla Mandela, the grandson of the late former President Nelson Mandela.

He addressed the media at the airport, becoming visibly emotional as he recounted the events of the past week.

"Let me also acknowledge our donors- many of us have no resources to see this work through. Yet with the support of our donors, we were able, as South Africa, to have a boat."

Despite their time held in an Israeli prison and claims of being tortured by Israeli forces, allegations which Israel has publicly denied, the group remains defiant and resolute in their commitment to continue supporting the plight of the Palestinians.
