Additional police resources deployed to UFH following student protests

Eastern Cape police have deployed additional resources to the University of Fort Hare following student protests.
Students at the Alice campus have been demanding the resignation of their vice chancellor, Sakhela Buhlungu.
They accuse him of poor management at the institution.

The students say they are also not happy with the suspension of the SRC president and the institution's plan to appoint an interim SRC president.
On Wednesday, students set the administration building block and the student centre alight.
Police spokesperson, Siphokazi Mawisa: "The South African Police Service has intensified high visibility at the university in Alice during the protest action that took place from Monday, 06 October 2025, at about 04h00."
Mawisa added they would continue to monitor the situation.
"The situation at the university remains tense; however, police continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further incidents. No arrest has been made for malicious damage to property and arson at this stage."
