The Cape Winelands District Municipality says residents should identify and remove any potential fire hazards around their homes.
The warning comes as the municipality shifts focus to warmer temperatures and the annual fire season.
Residents are also being urged to make sure they dispose of cigarette butts properly, ensure campfires are doused with water and to clear out dead, dry leaves from their roofs and gutters.
Winelands District Municipality's chief fire officer, Wayne Josias, said that fire prevention methods such as firebreaks were also a big help in preventing fires from spreading.
"Landowners should also be aware of any burn bans or fire restrictions during the veldfire season. They are also encouraged to make the necessary fire breaks to prevent fires from spreading from their property to their neighbours."
