Taxi association CODETA has lost its legal battle to force the government to end its route shutdown in Somerset West.

The government suspended several minibus taxi routes for 30 days from 17 September amid rising taxi violence.

In August and September, eight people were killed in the violence.

CODETA spokesperson Makhosandile Tumana says that they will listen to the government and wait to see what happens next.

However, he says they are concerned as they have yet to meet with rival association CATA to find a solution.

“CODETA is ready to engage with CATA at any time. The only challenge now is who is going to call the meeting? We were supposed to engage during this period of suspension to find a solution. It is very unfortunate that we only meet when we are called by the MEC. We never meet as CATA and CODETA,” says Tumana.

Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) spokesperson Nkulukelo Sityebi says they are prepared o meet with CODETA, but the meeting must happen with purpose and with a solution on the table.

“We want to meet with CODETA. The most important thing is to find a solution,” he continues.
