An 11-year-old boy and his father are expected to appear before the Thabazimbi Magistrate's Court in Limpopo on Monday for the alleged murder of a farm worker.

This follows a tragic shooting incident over the weekend.

The minor is believed to have been shooting at guinea fowls on the farm in the early hours of Saturday when police say he "accidentally" shot the farm worker.

Police in Thabazimbi were called to the scene after reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival, they discovered the body of a farmworker, believed to be in his thirties.

Police say the victim was found with a bullet wound to the chest.

He was declared dead on the scene.

Police allege the 11-year-old pulled the trigger.

His 43-year-old father was arrested and charged with negligent handling of a firearm.

Both the minor, in terms of the Child Justice Act, and his father are expected to appear in court.

Limpopo Police Commissioner Thembi Hadebe has since reiterated the importance of responsible firearm ownership.

"This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder that firearms must be handled with the utmost care and stored securely at all times. Parents and guardians must ensure that children do not have access to firearms under any circumstances," says Lieutenant General Hadebe.
