Umalusi confirms registration of over 700k full-time matric candidates for 2025 exams

The assessment quality assurer, Umalusi, has announced that a total of 766,000 National Senior Certificate (NSC) candidates have been registered to sit for the 2025 end-of-year examinations, which are set to begin next week.
The total figure was revealed during a media briefing held at Umalusi offices in Pretoria on Wednesday, where the organisation presented its report on the state of readiness for the upcoming examinations.
Of the more than one million candidates registered across the four assessment bodies, NSC candidates account for the largest share.
Umalusi’s manager for quality assurance of assessment, Mary-Antoinette Dliwayo, provided a detailed breakdown of the registrations across the various assessment bodies.
“The Department of Basic Education has registered 766,543 full-time candidates,” Ms Dliwayo stated.
“For the Independent Examinations Board (IEB), they have registered 17,427 candidates.”
She added that the South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute (SACAI) registered 6,174 candidates.
“In total, 790,144 National Senior Certificate candidates have been registered,” she concluded.
