Suspended police minister Senzo Mchunu said that before his directive to disband it, the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) was running rampant and was not coordinated.

Mchunu said the task team's disbandment was well considered, and the team had to be part of the serious and violent crime, so the expertise benefits the whole country and not just one or two provinces.

Mchunu was providing evidence earlier before Parliament's Ad Hoc Committee, where he was taken to task on his allegedly unlawful directive to disband the task team.

He said the PKTT was discussed in November last year, like they discuss all other task teams and units.

He said many task team members wrote to him privately to discuss issues around the team before his directive to disband it.

Mchunu told the evidence leader that the task team was singled out because it was running rampant following an internal assessment.

"In terms of the evaluation, they are not as coordinated as they should be, and they write down that they run rampant and so on. In other words, as part of their need to correct, it was self-criticism."

Mchunu states that issues around the new structure for the task team started in 2019, before his arrival.

He said the work of the task team simply replicates the work of other specialised police units.
