Western Cape police said they will deploy more boots on the ground to crime hotspots and tourist attractions ahead of the busy summer holiday.

The province launched its Festive Season Safety campaign in Khayelitsha on Wednesday, which will run until January.

Gender-based violence (GBV), extortion, robberies, and road safety are some of the identified focus areas.

Deputy Provincial Police Commissioner Luyanda Damoyi said security at all border posts would be enhanced to prevent the smuggling of illicit goods.

Damoyi added that they'll also crack down on illegal liquor traders and drunk driving.

"As we all know that during the festive season, the level of accidents, the level of abuse of alcohol, [and] the recklessness from our road users increases."

He said the safety and protection of all business hubs would also be prioritised.
