Instagram has revealed plans to limit content to its teenage users.
Based on the PG-13 ratings system, it will apply to content they can search, accounts they can interact with, and conversations with the platform’s AI chatbot.
With hundreds of millions of teenage users, social media expert Emma Sadleir hopes this will be a game-changer.
“The idea is to make sure that the children are not targeted with content that they shouldn’t be looking at," explains Sadleir.
In addition to providing your age when setting up an account, the platform will also make decisions based on the user’s interaction on the app.
The update is expected to be rolled out by the end of the year.
“Child safety issues have been at the forefront globally in the last two years, and I think that this is them listening," she adds.
"Let’s hope that it’s going to be a big change.”
