Mmusi Maimane accuses politicians of tampering with South Africa’s intelligence services.
He specifically called out the ANC for ‘undermining’ the service and failing to professionalise the sector.
“The professionalisation of the public service can no longer be delayed,” says Maimane.
His criticisms come after President Cyril Ramaphosa suspended the inspector general of intelligence, Imtiaz Fazel, on Wednesday night.
Maimane says this situation is deeply concerning, and South Africans are right to feel that their policing and crime intelligence are inefficient.
“South Africa’s leadership failure has meant we are entering into a space of omni crises, where it is one crisis after another, because when the initial symptoms occur, we fail the basic job of acting then. We do not act until we are at crisis levels,” he says.
He argues that the state has been so profoundly captured by the ANC that it now only serves the party instead of the public.
