Cape Town taxi association CODETA said that while it condemns the killing of a taxi owner from rival association, CATA, the incident shouldn’t be linked to route issues in the Somerset West area.
A 32-year-old taxi boss was shot and killed on the R300 highway while travelling with his personal security detail on Monday.
Both his bodyguards were injured in the attack and rushed to hospital.
In September, Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku implemented a 30-day shutdown of taxi routes between Khayelitsha, Mfuleni, and Somerset West.
The measures were put in place following deadly violence linked to a feud between CATA and CODETA over these routes.
The routes have since been opened, and CODETA spokesperson, Makhosandile Tumana, said the issues with that route had nothing to do with Monday's shooting.
"We condemn the killing, and we also want to express our condolences to the family of this young man and to the entire CATA region."
He's appealed to all the members of the industry to remain calm.
