One of the teenage survivors of the deadly Westbury shooting in Johannesburg believes the attack on him and his friends was driven by sheer hate.

The 19-year-old is the first of five victims who survived the ordeal to be discharged from hospital.

On Tuesday, a group of four teenagers, three of whom were armed, opened fire on the group of seven, killing two and injuring five others.

Police suspect the motive behind the shooting is gang-related.

However, survivor Carl Mento said he and his friends aren’t part of or affiliated with any gangs.

Mento recounted the traumatic shooting: “We were sitting here on the stoop yesterday [Tuesday], about four guys came and started shooting at us, and my friend tried to protect me.”

Mento sustained a gunshot wound to his right ear. His friend, who tried to protect him, is one of the two who didn't survive.

“When they shot me in my ear, he lay over me, they shot him in the neck and here in the back.”

He added that he knows exactly who shot at him and his friends.

“Honestly, when the bullet hit us, they stay over this brown house here where I'm looking at, yah I'm not scared to say it's Avery. That guy's doesn't like us.”

Mento said the same group had targeted him and friends before, but this time they had nowhere to run.
