Have you been relying for years on Google Chrome as the trusty browser leading you to the information you're searching for on the Internet?

Well, the landscape is changing, and changing fast.

OpenAI has launched its AI browser 'Atlas', which challenges Google's dominance of around a quarter of a century in this space.

The artificial intelligence-powered web browser does away with the address bar that is a key feature in search as we know it.

It can also help with tasks, says OpenAI.

Some users may well prefer that this browser is embedded on ChatGPT, says tech expert Siphumelele Zondi.

"It's something a lot of people are gravitating towards... where they don't have to go to a separate ChatGPT;  they can go to Atlas and then Atlas would link them back."

Zondi sees OpenAI as still in the process of building what the platform is ultimately going to look like.

"I suppose they're working with us, the users, in order to create the way of the information... For now, the belief is if you use Atlas, you're going to get all the information you're looking for without the prioritisation of the organisations that would have paid for their content to be at the top."

Atlas rolled out with the launch to everyone on MacOS.

Windows, iOS, and Android are coming soon, the company says.
