Misinformation being spread on social media about incidents of bullying and assault at Milnerton High School is having a devastating impact on the children involved.

That's according to a parent of one of the alleged victims, who has shared her feelings with EWN.

On Thursday, eight learners from the school appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates Court, formally charged with eight counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

It emerged in court that an additional ninth complainant also lodged complaints against the accused.

The learners were this week handed suspension letters after a video of one of the incidents went viral.

The mother of one of the complainants has spoken to EWN on condition of anonymity.

"Our main concern is for our boy's well-being. There's nine children that have been affected by this. The main concern that I have is that a lot of kids are being affected by the social media aspect of things. People are jumping on the bandwagon... they are spreading heaps of misinformation, lies... everyone thinks they know the story but no one was actually there."

The woman is appealing to the public to stop.

"I would plead with the public to stop. Stop spreading misinformation. Stop talking about it. Yes, we need to bring awareness to what's happened, I understand that, but it's the misinformation that's the problem. It's the misinformation that is creating a lot of strain on these boys."
