The Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) has launched a provincial anti-human trafficking campaign themed "End Exploitation" at OR Tambo International Airport.
Chair of Committees, Dalton Adams, led the launch on Wednesday, emphasising the urgent need to enhance border security, conduct widespread awareness drives, and utilise intelligence to detect the threat of organised trafficking schemes.
Law enforcement officers, airport authorities and NGOs were on the ground at the OR Tambo International Airport to educate travellers about the scourge with the distribution pamphlets.
Adams highlighted that South Africa does not yet fully meet the minimum international anti-trafficking standards, calling for stronger collaboration between airport management, police, and government departments, such as Social Development, to combat these crimes.
"All law enforcement agencies must take hands together with all civic organisations, faith-based organisations, which I feel is something we are lacking - which was strong at some stage," said Adams.
In addition to strengthening airport security, there is a public call for better training of airport personnel. This training is essential to help staff correctly identify people at risk and report cases without causing further harm to potential victims.
