The South African Policing Union (SAPU) is concerned about the lack of mental health resources available to the police service.
The union reports that during 2024, they recorded 62 police officer deaths due to their declining mental health.
SAPU reports that SAPS is ill-resourced in providing mental health support.
SAPU president, Mpho Kwinika, said that officers were hesitant to use the psychological services provided due to stigmas around it.
"Because of this critical shortage of psychologists and social services, which are playing a very important role in intercepting these issues before the social ills that the police are faced with on a daily basis, either from home or from work. The department need to employ as many as we need or sufficient who can be able to cover stations."
