The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment said the ban on using drones for fishing was crucial for marine preservation.
Offenders face a fine of to R2 million or a 5-year prison sentence.
A recreational fisher was arrested in Strandfontein, Cape Town, over the weekend for using a drone to cast his bait.
Department spokesperson, Thobile Zulu-Molobi, said the ban had been in place since 2005.
"Recreational anglers and members of the public have previously been warned that they could face enforcement action, should they be caught using such devices."
