Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) is calling for tighter security at prisons.

The call comes after a stabbing incident on Wednesday morning at Pollsmoor Corrections Centre.

The incident left two inmates dead and two correctional officials injured.

POPCRU provincial secretary Mluleki Mbhele said that the Department of Correctional Services should explore new technology to improve security at prisons.

"Technology needs also to be implemented. We are living in the fourth IR, so there should be issues of technology that are implemented so as to assist in ensuring that the security is tightened in these facilities."

Mbhele added that responsibility to address these issues lie with two government departments.

"So, it is the Department of Correctional Services and also the Department of Public Works needs also to answer to this because they are the ones that must assist the Department of Correctional Services to have proper facilities so that to avoid this particular incident."
