The South African population has been cited as a vulnerable nation for its severe anaemia risk.
Anaemia advocate at the Cape Town Infusion Centre, Sister Karin Davidson, said two out of three children were iron-deficient, and so are one in three elderly people.
She added that this prevents a large number of the population across all ages from functioning at optimum levels.
Davidson highlighted the link between low iron levels and mental health challenges.
"Anaemia is known as the world's biggest non-communicable disease pandemic, affecting 1.62 billion people around the world.”
