More than 20 people have died this week alone from a series of horrific taxi accidents across the country.

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has noted that these incidents are a stark reminder that the safety of passengers is a collective responsibility for all in the transport sector.

On Thursday, eight people died in a collision on the N3 between the Van Reenen’s Pass and Montrose, while several were left wounded.

Earlier this week, three other crashes claimed the lives of 14 people, bringing the total fatality count to over 20.

SANTACO spokesperson Mmatshikidi Phala said: "SANTACO President Mr Motlhabane Abnar Tsebe, together with the entire national leadership, have expressed deep concern and heartbreak over the rising number of fatalities and the devastating impact on families and communities," Phala stated.
