The Two Oceans Aquarium has confirmed the return of these massive marine mammals to the city’s coastline for their annual moulting season, a natural process where they shed their outer layer of skin and fur.
It’s a vulnerable time for the seals, and locals are being urged to keep their distance.
Authorities said it’s important not to approach them, pour water on them, or cross any barriers set up for their protection.
Their arrival is being described as a special treat for nature lovers - a chance to witness one of the ocean’s more unusual visitors up close, but safely.
"Here are some important safety rules to follow around elephant seals. Respect their space, always stay at least 20 metres away. Respect cordoned off areas by remaining behind any barriers set in place. Do not pour water over the elephant seal as this causes unnecessary additional stress," said Two Oceans Aquarium spokesperson Heather Wares.
