Five people have died in a head-on collision on the M4 highway in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape. 

The deadly accident occurred on Friday evening when two vehicles ploughed into each other.  

Two people sustained injuries in the accident.

Eastern Cape transport spokesperson Unathi Bhinqose says police are investigating the cause of the crash.

“It is the worst possible way to start a weekend, a month-end weekend, and the worst possible way to end October transport month, but the MEC for transport in the Eastern Cape, Mr Xolile Nqatha, is extending his sincere word of condolences to those families that have lost their loved ones in this crash, wishing those in hospital a speedy and a full recovery.” Bhinqose said.
