One of South Africa’s oldest football clubs is undergoing a bold rebrand.
Speaking to Robert Marawa, club CEO Sinenjabulo Zungu says that, after 93 years, it was time for a refresh.
The new logo maintains its traditional shield but features a cleaner, modern design.
The club also introduces a football mascot, "Hebe", a South African first at club level, drawing inspiration from the 2010 FIFA World Cup’s "Zakumi".
“Like every brand, no matter how great it is, it has got to be refreshed. If you stay unchanged, you will go stale,” he says.
He adds: “The font that we have used was informed by what our supporters use when they have those posters at the stadium, the hand-written ones.”
AmaZulu currently sits in 7th place in the PSL with 15 points from 10 games.
Zungu hopes the new identity will inspire and reignite the passion among the team.
When he joined in 2020, he implemented a "Vision 2032" plan for the club, which includes winning the league when it celebrates its 100th anniversary.
“We were quite ambitious, and possibly, we placed a lot of pressure on ourselves to achieve things that other people would take a long time to achieve. Many people were surprised that we set ourselves a target of being in the top four in the first season. They laughed us off. We came second, we were in the final of the MTN8; we played in the Champions League,” he says.
“We would love to lift a cup, and we will lift a cup. We would love to win the league, and we will win the league.”
