The South African Police Union (SAPU) said that allegations of widespread police corruption were painting the entire police rank and file in a bad light.

The union, which has more than 80,000 members, said the claims of police corruption that were before two investigative inquiries have resulted in low morale among its members who work with communities.

SAPU second vice president, Peter Ntsime, came to the defence of lower-ranking officers while making inputs on the annual report of the South African police in Parliament on Monday.

Ntsime said that criticism of the police should be more constructive.

"Those who are engaging with communities on a daily basis is that constable. Those who are being told the police are corrupt are the ones who don’t even know of Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala. They only see him on television. These are our members. It affects their morale."
