The South African Communist Party (SACP) has taken another thinly veiled swipe at the African National Congress (ANC), accusing the party of bowing to political pressure of some partners in the Government of National Unity (GNU), continuing to sideline its old allies.

SACP general secretary Solly Mapaila addressed party members on a range of issues, including reaffirming a decision to run against its tripartite alliance partner the ANC in 2026’s local government elections.
The SACP said its decision was largely due to the ANC refusing to reconfigure the alliance’s terms to include more consensus decision making.
Mapaila still insisted that this doesn’t spell the end of the alliance, which is more than three decades old.
But he said a shift in dynamics in the alliance warrants the move.
“We gave so much trust, so much so that we don’t even have leverage for the ANC to change its position. Some unknown parties, recently established, can control the ANC. Our leverage is the trust we have in the ANC and when they betray that trust, we are left with nothing.”
