Siyathemba Municipality faces fresh probe over irregular procurement of office equipment

The Siyathemba Local Municipality in the Northern Cape is once again under scrutiny, this time for allegedly flouting procurement processes related to the purchase of printers and photocopy machines.

The municipality previously faced allegations of mismanagement in September concerning the irregular appointments of senior managers who lacked the required qualifications.

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) will now probe whether the prices of the equipment bought between January 2016 and October were inflated or whether the purchases were authorised at all.

SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago stated that anyone found to have committed a crime in the latest probe will be prosecuted.

"Beyond investigating maladministration, corruption, and fraud, the SIU is committed to identifying systemic failures and recommending measures to prevent future losses."

Kganyago added that the SIU is also authorised to initiate civil action to address any wrongdoing identified during its investigation resulting from acts of corruption, fraud, or maladministration.
