At least five informal structures have been affected by a sinkhole in Two Town, Khayelitsha.
Ward 93 councillor Thando Pimpi said that the families affected have left their homes to stay with family and friends as a precaution.
The sinkhole started forming a few weeks ago, causing panic among residents.
Pimpi confirmed that the structures are, however, built on the sewer line.
"There is no one who is injured at the moment. But people are staying with their friends, others with their relatives. They just locked their houses. So far, there is no one who is in danger."
Spokesperson for the City of Cape Town Luthando Tyhalibongo said that the sunken areas are being filled as a temporary measure.
"Because of these illegal structures, the city's Water and Sanitation teams are unable to safely excavate and repair the damaged sewer line. To resolve the current issue, the city's Human Settlement Directorate plans to relocate the affected families and remove the structures that are blocking access to the line."
