WC police: Probe into George building collapse cause should wrap up in November

Western Cape police said they should wrap up the investigation into the cause of the George building collapse by the end of November.
Thirty-four construction workers were killed and 28 others seriously injured when a multi-storey building caved in on 75 Victoria Street in the George CBD.

A search-and-rescue operation of the 62 artisans buried underneath 6,000 tonnes of rubble lasted 11 days.
The site was then handed over to the police to investigate the cause of the disaster.
Provincial police management briefed Parliament's portfolio committees on Human Settlementa and on Public Works on the progress of their 18-month-long probe.
Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection Major-General Bongani Maqashalala explained why there’ve been delays in the investigation.
"The warning statement of engineer Athol Mitchell, the principal agent. We had arranged with them that we were going to receive the warning statement in November, a statement from Suhane Maart from the National Home Builders Regulatory Council. Apparently, she is not mentally fit to submit the statement. She has been sick since the incident, but we've got the report from that space."
