The City of Johannesburg said it’s concerned that informal traders in the metro appear reluctant to register for permits.

Earlier this week, the Gauteng High Court gave the city a two-week deadline to verify street vendors and allocate them trading stalls in the CBD.

The city has been working to tidy up the city centre, including ensuring that informal traders operate only in designated zones.

City officials visited the CBD on Thursday to encourage informal traders to register.

Acting Mayor Eunice Mgcina has called on informal traders to utilise this opportunity.

“We are worried about the turnout of those informal traders. They aren’t coming as we expect them to and there’s a list of about 525 traders that registered to be verified but so far, we don’t have a sizeable number.”
