The former bodyguards of Deputy President Paul Mashatile will on Thursday learn if assault charges against them will be dropped.

The eight men, attached to South African Police Service (SAPS) VIP Presidential Protection Unit, face several charges of assault after they were filmed assaulting off-duty soldiers on the side of N1 highway last year.

They are expected to appear before the Randburg Magistrates Court, where a ruling is expected on their Section 174 discharge application.

The application was brought by an accused who believes the State had failed to make a case against them.

It has been made at the close of the State’s case during a criminal trial.

A ruling on the application of the eight men was initially supposed to be handed down on 9 October 2025.

However, the magistrate fell il and the matter was postponed.

Civil rights organisation Action Society hopes the application is rejected.

Its spokesperson, Juanita du Preez, explained.

“The eight accused should be treated as the criminals they are. They disregarded the law, the misused their authority and brutalised civilians instead of protecting them.”

If the application is accepted, the eight men will be free to go, however; if it’s rejected, the trial will continue.

Communitymembers will be given a chance to share their concerns and reflect on the impact this case has had on the neighbourhood.
