Answering questions in the National Assembly on Thursday, Ramaphosa said the high number of gang-related deaths recorded weekly in the city is concerning.
Ramaphosa believes new policing plans that are being developed will be able to curb gangsterism andextortion.
“We are also going to make sure that the financial capability, thereof, is also present so that we are able to deal with the scourge as effectively as we possibly can.”
But he said communities, which often shield criminals, have a role to play too.
“I do have the confidence that we will be able to make a success. The National Security Council will be meeting again very soon to deal exactly with the actual and detailed plans that the police are going to embark upon.”
Ramaphosa said government is grappling with the root causes of gangsterism, which include unemployment and a sluggish economy.
