Nelson Mandela University says it’s investigating the circumstances around the death of one of its students.

Sesethu Mboza died by suicide at an off-campus residence last Friday.

Eastern Cape police confirmed that Mboza had opened a case of rape in September.

The inquest investigation into her death was opened 22 days after the rape accused was released on bail.

Management at Nelson Mandela University has expressed deep sadness after the deaths of five of its students in a span of three weeks.

In the first incident, a student died after being stabbed in a robbery at an off-campus private residence and another was found unresponsive in his room.

Then last week Friday, three NMU students lost their lives - one died by suicide off campus, in Gqeberha and two others, from its George campus, died in a drowning-related incident.

NMU Spokesperson- Zandile Ngwendu said: "Each one a young life with promise, potential and purpose. Their passing has left an immeasurable void in our university community’s very soul. We extend our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to family, friends and loved ones."

NMU added that it will be assessing the efficacy of its internal systems during its investigations and it would make fact-based recommendations on how to strengthen its response and preventative measures.
