IN PICS: Donald Trump shows off his remodelling of White House's Lincoln bathroom

US President Donald Trump has shown off his remodelling of the bathroom attached to the Lincoln Bedroom in the White House.

He posted images on social media, heralding the gold fixtures and new cladding - "highly polished. Statuary marble!" 

This followed the US president's controversial demolition of the entire East Wing of the White House in October, to make way for the construction of a $300m ballroom.

Trump said the new black and white marble in the refurbished Lincoln bathroom is "very appropriate for the time of Abraham Lincoln and, in fact, could be the marble that was originally there!"

Alongside before and after photos, Trump wrote that the bathroom "was renovated in the 1940s in an art deco green tile style, which was totally inappropriate for the Lincoln Era".

The bathroom is a part of Abraham Lincoln's office and cabinet room, which former president Harry Truman redesigned as a part of his renovation of the White House in the late 1940s.

The White House said the renovation was privately funded at no cost to the taxpayer, the BBC reports.
