Group of Westbury residents claim exclusion from Police Ministry engagements

A group of Westbury residents claimed that they’ve been excluded from the Police Ministry engagements that are currently underway in Sophiatown.

Acting Minister of Police Firoz Chalia, accompanied by police top brass, is currently meeting with some Westbury community leaders to find ways to address the crime and gangsterism problem in the area.

Over the past few weeks, gang-related shootings in Westbury and Reiger Park have claimed the lives of at least eight people.

West Rand community leader Eugene Dooms said he wasn’t informed about the meeting and has no idea who the selected leaders are.

"I only got to know about it this morning [Monday] when I saw, you know, on the news that a meeting was going to take place today, and I was also taken by surprise, you know, because I mean, as community leaders, activists, we are supposed to be informed about all of this so that we can provide our opinion and also give, you know, solutions as people on the ground that’s affected by happenings in our areas, especially Westbury and surrounding areas."
