A women's rights organisation is calling on South African women to abstain from contributing to the economy for a day.

Women for Change said the Women’s Shutdown next Friday is aimed at highlighting the increasing attack on women.

Operations and activism coordinator at Women for Change Merlize Jogiat said those who are unable to take the day off can wear black and lie down at midday for 15 minutes.

“We want to present how scary it looks to have groups of women who are essentially killed because of their gender. I think, if we have lots and lots of women showing up in different locations just laying on the floor, the imagery of that speaks so deeply to the amount of victims that we are losing by femicide in South Africa.”
