Cases of fraud and defamation have been opened against embattled Crime Intelligence head, Dumisani Khumalo at the Brooklyn Police Station in Pretoria on Wednesday morning.

The cases were opened by Stuart Scharnick, a close associate of the suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner, Shadrack Sibiya.

This, after Khumalo listed Scharnick’s criminal history before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry last week.

According to Khumalo, Scharnick was convicted on 18 counts related to theft and carjacking.

Scharnick doesn’t dispute the convictions but said he was never convicted of carjacking.

He said the fraud charge will likely be changed to a charge of perjury, for lying under oath, and defeating the ends of justice, at a later stage.

“After consulting with my legal counsel, we decided to open these criminal cases against him because what he said was factually incorrect, and as the head of Crime Intelligence, he has all the access to these resources to verify his story before lying under oath.”

Scharnick said his legal team is currently quantifying the damage caused to his reputation.

“We are quantifying the damages because it has far-reaching effects, particularly because the Madlanga Commission has been broadcast nationally and internationally.”
