The City of Johannesburg is now turning its attention to removing unregulated and unauthorised taxi ranks in the CBD as part of its efforts to clean up the area.

In recent years, taxi ranks have mushroomed across the city centre without municipal approval.

This move follows the city's recent evictions of informal traders who were operating outside designated trading zones and without municipal authorisation.

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero said illegal taxi ranks would be dealt with in the same way, expressing concern about their rapid increase across the CBD.

Mayor Morero confirmed that the crackdown on illegal ranks was a key part of the city’s commitment to restoring order.

"We are also going to be dealing, as part of our commitment, with illegal taxi ranks, and the process of engaging the taxi association has begun."

Morero said the broader clean-up of the CBD would also include addressing the issue of homelessness.

"We are making a commitment to deal with homelessness, so that it’s properly organised in the city. We must find a better way of managing homelessness in the City of Johannesburg."
