President Cyril Ramaphosa says speeding up the building of schools is critical to achieving quality education.
He spoke at the National Construction Summit, which is underway in Boksburg.
The two-day summit has brought together government officials, labour and business partners.
Many gathered at the construction summit are in agreement that infrastructure is key to economic growth, as it presents opportunities in job creation and transformation.
Speaking at the summit, Ramaphosa said that in order to reduce inequality, pupils needed classrooms, sanitation facilities and safe learning environments.
"We are here also so that we can build a country where there are enough classrooms for all the children of our country."
He added that the dignity of pupils must be restored.
"Where no child has to swim across a river to get to school is what we are here about, to build bridges, so that our children can cross rivers to go to school in a safe manner."
The president said the idea also presented a business opportunity.
