The African National Congress (ANC) said that while Eskom is making significant progress in addressing the power crisis, the utility is still falling short in making electricity more affordable for South Africans.
The party’s national executive committee (NEC) is meeting in Germiston on Saturday afternoon to discuss the state of the economy.
Eskom recently announced that its energy availability factor has improved to 70%, a key indicator of the grid’s maximum generation capacity.
Speaking to the media, ANC NEC member Zuko Godlimpi said there is still much work to be done.
“What the NEC is concerned about is the rising costs of electricity. We need to balance between availability for energy security and households’ ability to afford electricity.
“Related to that is what we need to do in respect to job creation. One of the vulnerabilities we are experiencing on competitiveness for the industry is the cost of electricity for our industrial sector.”
