Tributes pour in for former Western Cape Speaker Sharna Fernandez

Tributes are pouring in for the late former Western Cape Speaker of the Provincial Parliament, Sharna Fernandez.

The 66-year-old reportedly passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday night.

Fernandez will be remembered for her dedication to social issues affecting the underprivileged and vulnerable residents.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape has praised Fernandez for her years of service.

As a long-serving member of the party, Fernandez was elected Speaker of the Provincial Parliament in 2014. In 2019, she was appointed Western Cape Minister of Social Development.

The DA’s Western Cape Leader, Tertuis Simmers, sent his condolences to her family, noting her unwavering commitment to public service.

"The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape is deeply saddened by the passing of Sharna. Sharna dedicated her life to service; she began community work in 2011, and by 2014, she was elected by the Western Cape to the Provincial Parliament, where she became Speaker. In 2019, she became the Minister of Social Development, a role in which she fought tirelessly for vulnerable residents, especially the elderly affected by SASSA."
