Electricity has been restored to most areas that were affected by the storms, says Elijah Mhlanga of the Gauteng Provincial Government.

Severe weather caused flooding, fallen trees, and damaged infrastructure across Gauteng over the weekend.

The spokesperson for the Gauteng Provincial Government, Elijah Mhlanga, says early warnings from the South African Weather Service helped prevent a major loss of life.

While several roads were closed due to flooding, authorities expect to reopen them today as the weather moves toward Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

He adds that electricity has also been restored to most areas that were affected by the storms.

“The rain stopped falling in the afternoon, and that assisted the workers in being able to do the work. They will work today. The prediction is that the rain will be going away today,” says Mhlanga.

“We are grateful that the weather service has done a good job of also assessing the situation and downgrading warnings from level 9 to level 6.”

Mhlanga says the government is now focusing on completing the preparations for the upcoming G20 Leaders Summit this weekend.

This includes repairing streetlights, beautification, and cleanup efforts that were affected by the rain.

While the rain has subsided, Mhlanga warns the public to remain alert.

“We continue to caution South Africans because where the rains have fallen, the water is still moving. Those who are nearest to the dams need to take care because the dam levels have increased. We still need to remain on high alert because anything can still happen."
