Parliament says its delegation to the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) will learn from best practices on how to mitigate the impact of climate change in South Africa.

The 10-member delegation comprises multiple parties who will fly the country's flag at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change taking place in Belém, Brazil.

The South African delegation won't be led by head of state, Cyril Ramaphosa, or the minister of minister of forestry, fisheries and the environment, after the former minister, Dion George, was removed from Cabinet during the conference, which ends on Friday.

COP30 is an international forum where countries gather to find legally binding or non-binding courses of action to address the climate crisis.

South Africa has been an active participant to represent the country's interests like securing climate finance and how the country can address its own unique climate change challenges like flooding disasters.

The 10-member delegation comprises five members each from the National Assembly’s portfolio committee n forestry, fisheries and environment, and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP)'s select committee on agriculture, land reform and mineral resources

Parliament spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo, said South African MPs would have an opportunity to learn from the experiences and best practices of other parliaments in addressing climate change.

He said that through such engagements with their international counterparts, the country's lawmakers could "gain valuable insights into innovative approaches" to legislation, policy frameworks and financing.
