The Department of Defence has announced that Minister Angie Motshekga will be taking appropriate steps against the country's Navy chief, Vice Admiral Monde Lobese, following comments he made over the weekend regarding underfunding.
Speaking at a South African (SA) Navy Gala event on Saturday, Vice Admiral Lobese stated that maritime security was at risk because of underfunding and a shortage of resources.
Minister Motshekga has since clarified that Vice Admiral Lobese's remarks did not reflect the official position of the Department of Defence.
Defence Department spokesperson Simphiwe Dlamini issued a strong statement in response to the Navy chief's comments.
"The minister regards these remarks not only as inappropriate, disingenuous and unfortunate on a matter he is fully aware that is receiving attention at all levels, starting from within the department to Parliament."
